The screenplay I wrote is called Big Shot. The main character is a black geek in his mid-twenties living in Texas. He just became an assistant manager at the grocery store he has worked at since high school.
Trevor is also moving out of his Grandmothers house over her very vocal disapproval. She thinks its a waste of money, he doesnt care about his poor old Grandmother anymore, and he cant take care of himself. To help ease her fears over the last one, she gives him his Grandfathers pistol.
The first night in his new place, a robber does break in, and Trevor shoots and kills him. Suddenly his life is changed. The Sheriff wants him to appear at his campaign rally, the local news media is calling him a hero, and his boss wants him to star in a new commercial for the store.
For the first time in his life, he feels like he is getting the respect he deserves. It all comes crashing down on him in a hilarious way when the local college football team beats the state champions knocking him off the front page. Suddenly, its the football team appearing with the Sheriff at the rally while Trevor ends up serving BBQ. Then he finds out his part in the commercial has been changed. The Quarterback is now taking his place.
A plan starts forming in Trevors mind after he goes to the police station to pick up his Grandfathers pistol. While hes there, he sees a pamphlet about obtaining a Concealed Weapons Permit. A wild daydream and his store getting robbed later, Trevor decides the way to get back in the news is to shoot another robber in an act of premeditated self-defense.
Trevors best friend Ben thinks he has lost his mind when he hears about the plan. Bens thirteen-year-old brother initially thinks it could be a good idea because they do live in Texas after all, but after looking at his very African American friend, Trevor, he changes his mind.
Ben is very overweight and comes from a rich family. Trevor and Ben have been friends since childhood. Eddie, Bens little brother, could be the poster boy for what happens to the children of over-protective parents. He carries around a camcorder that he says is to scare predators away, but what he really uses it for is filming pretty girls when hes in public. Hes also a gigantic smartass.
Im very happy with the way it turned out.
Here is a sample of the over-the-top daydream shootout scene. It's a comedy, so I made it cheesy and as funny as I could. [link]
